Business is not a fairy-tale. The ending certainly might be, assuming you break into untold riches and gain industry stature. Before that, though, you might hit a snag along the way – one of which could be accepting that your accountancy firm, despite its initial value, has lost its touch.
In light of Valentine’s Day, we’re considering the professional ‘break-up’ you might initiate, and how to find a better partner for your finances. Falling out of love with a firm that’s been with you for a while can be hard to accept, but switching over could be a breath of fresh air…
Why cracks appear
Last week we published a piece about the rock-solid foundations of a client/accountant bond: how to treat each other well, and what may be lacking. In it, we describe the qualities of listening, planning ahead and responding to each other well, all of which are crucial to motivating a great service. You can’t rely on a person with such responsibilities – endemic to your success – if they simply aren’t communicating.
So, you may have noticed an overt lack of customer care, a creeping sense that you are merely one of many fish in the pond. Or, conversely, you may have outgrown your accountant, expanding beyond both of your expectations and direly seeking more specialist expertise than the firm is able to give.
The importance of a close relationship
Since your monetary status is ever-changing, with complexities that don’t reward a negligent eye, you shouldn’t be suffering the wrong service. A hiccup in your finances might go undetected for weeks or months, by which point the damage has already been inflicted on your long-term viability. Without that visibility, you’ll start making poor decisions, advised by someone who doesn’t know (or care to know) the subtleties of your income.
Furthermore, you’re wasting money on the service itself. If you’re a freelancer or contractor, this isn’t a frivolous expense. Some accountants will push for higher pricing without, in actual fact, boosting your earning potential or the value they bring to the table. Is this a risk worth taking?
